The client for this project walked into the first meeting with a small model he created with paper index cards. As he is a writer in the film industry, they were the handiest material he could find. With much teasing and laughter over the sticky-tape-and-paper creation we began a wonderful design process. Now that the house is complete, and our clients get to live in the paper-turned-real-life home we checked in to ask them about their experience.
1. Favorite place in the house and why?
R: I love the bedroom the most because it lets in so much light and we get to see the ocean every morning. And then there is the fireplace for those cold nights and mornings...pure heaven.
D: My favorite room in the house is not actually a room. It's the bedswing on the exterior second floor with a view of the ocean. Whether I am working on script or taking an afternoon nap, I am outside while being surrounded by the house.

2. Where does the dog spend the most time?
R & D: The boys follow us around the house but they will inevitably find a sunny spot in any room and enjoy the sunbathing!
3. Most relaxing spot in the house?
R: I love the small alcove on my side of the bathroom - the egg tub, the rocks surrounding the tub and the stone tile walls make it all feel tropical and relaxing.
D: It's hard to say what the most relaxing room is but I find myself retreating to the bedroom when I need to relax. The ocean view and huge sliders make me feel like I am outside, while enjoying the peace and quiet of being inside our home.
4. Something that surprised you / we would never guess about the house? For example, your story about making friends with the crows would be perfect here.
R & D: The house has made the prospect of traveling far less appealing than it used to be or than we expected. We generally love adventures but it is hard to pull ourselves away from our home now!

5. Anything you care to share about spending lockdown / pandemic in the house?
D: I've never owned a thing that made me this happy. I'm really not someone who craves material things, but I love this house. The house also feels huge because of the glass and light and openness, even though it has a narrow footprint and reasonable square footage.
R: I have gotten enormous joy from gardening in the front space, even though it is quite small, and maintaining our indoor rock garden. Also, the design of the house discourages clutter and a lot of furniture - I love the simplicity, openness and connection to nature that the house incorporates.
