For this project, Sander Architects designed a combination of new construction and tenant improvement to transform the raw space of a City of Commerce warehouse into a refined laboratory capable of the highest levels of science.
Our clients, Anresco Laboratories, are family owned and operated since 1943, and they provide analytical testing services to food and food-related industries. Their work is recognized by the FDA, among other Federal and State Agencies. Their scientists are skilled in microbiology, chemistry, microscopy and chromatography.

Headquartered in San Francisco, they were searching for a Los Angeles location that would include reception, admin/office, clean rooms, laboratory and research spaces. The challenge was to take an existing warehouse subdivided into a rabbit warren of small rooms and transform it into a home for high-tech science.
INTERIOR VIEWS

One of the biggest needs, to create additional work area, was easily accomplished through architect Whitney Sander’s suggestion to carefully insert a mezzanine within the existing high-ceiling structure. This ultimately increased the usable space by 45%.

We used a color palette based on the blue of the client's branding, to add visual sophistication. This blue is displayed in the stairs, the ductwork, and machine hoods. It is also employed in alternating drawers in the research areas.

COMPANY LOGO
A clean row of black pendant lights down the hallways, and a prominent chandelier in the entry, are examples of lighting strategies more often seen in hospitality settings. In this context, the design choices work with each other to create a sense of intentionality.

The final result combines refined design and state-of-the-art science for a visually pleasing, highly functional laboratory building.
