Twist House The site for this residence is a Malibu hillside lot with views in two directions that are slightly off axis. The solution that allows the house to capture both views was to create two volumes, one layered over the other with the upper level twisted so that it faces the rear view more directly.

Another issue to resolve was the zoning laws that greatly limited the allowable indoor square footage for the house.

In response, the volumes are punctuated to create outdoor rooms, or courtyards, where the family will be able to enjoy the fine weather of Southern California. These, along with generous exterior decks almost double the square footage of the livable space.

The house has a painting studio for the client, a swimming pool, double height spaces in the living room and kitchens, three bedrooms and a spare room/office/guest room.


1,440 sf total finished project (plus approximately 1,000sf in exterior decks and courtyards.)
