HYBRID
HOUSE can
be many things: high-end residence
with expensive finishes or
first home in a suburb. What
makes it unique is that it
allows your budget to go further
and it's designed to suit
you and your unique needs.

residence
for a briard
(completion 11/07)
This
is a 3,000 sf residence in
the residential neighborhood
of Culver City, California.
Designed for a music critic
/ architecture writer, his
wife and two children -- and
their two very large, very
hairy, Briard dogs from France.
Everything from the stairs
to the finishes are designed
to accommodate the brood.
This is also one of the most
eco-friendly projects to ever
come out of our office. more |

residence
for a sculptor 3
(complete)
A
4,500 sf high-end residence
designed and built in Santa
Rosa, California, this building
used the metaphor of the owner/sculptor's
tall pottery vessels to create
the vertical entry space.
Stairs wind up one curving
wall and a two-story metal
sculpture defines the other.
The owners wanted no exterior
upkeep (repainting) so metal
panels, normally used as roofing,
wrap the house. more |

residence
at the butte
(complete)
A
4,500 sf residence on a horse
ranch in Oregon this home
is 140 feet long and 25 feet
wide. Situated between a small
lake and distant cliffs, the
site is stunning. The design
of the building skin deliberately
responds to the weathered
rock of the butte. The clients
requested privacy, an art
studio, and space for a teenage
son. more |

helicopter
house
A
4,000 sf residence hovering
above a 2,000 foot cliff,
the house is designed with
four interior spaces that
are open to the sky: a zen
rock garden surrounds the
master bath; a bamboo garden
separates the master bed from
the main house; a swimming
pool penetrates the house
between the kitchen and an
in-house sound recording studio;
a sculptural staircase sweeps
through an entry that is open
to the stars. The roof of
this HYBRID HOUSE is designed
to accommodate a helipad. more |

twist
house
A
3,000 sf residence perched
on a site that slopes on both
ends, this house is just at
the beginning stages of design
for a young couple and their
daughter. Due to extremely
strict size limitations for
the neighborhood, the design
creates almost as many square
feet in exterior "rooms"
as interior, in order to take
advantage of it's Southern
California location and fine
weather. more |

x
house
This
8,000sf high-end residence
designed as a second home
in Sun Valley, Idaho, will
have expansive rooms, luxurious
finishes and views that go
for miles. The x-shape of
the design accommodates four
wings that can function independently:
a guest wing, children's wing,
master bedroom wing and a
central great room which,
along with the fourth wing,
provides the public areas
of the house. This way, multiple
families can vacation together,
converge when desired and
still have privacy. more |

c
house
Designed
as a 2,000sf second home for
a mountain lot that drops
away to magnificent views,
this project is a perfect
example of the way that our
part prefab all custom (TM)
concept allows the HYBRID
HOUSE to be built on many
different kinds of lots, including
steep hillsides. This home
will have a separate work
studio suspended above the
parking. A gently curved,
c-shaped "sky fence"
wraps the studio and main
house and links them to the
two main rock outcrops on
the site. Some of these rocks
are also enclosed by the glass
walls of the living room.

green / houses
A pair of townhouses that
face one another over a drivable courtyard, these two
houses are like siblings—related but not identical. They
both have interior gardens that are open to above so
that the core of each house is a green living space.
Much of the extensive glazing will be a multi-wall
translucent material often used in greenhouses in order
to allow in light but retain privacy.

skygarden townhouses
The driving force behind
this project is a pair of developers who want to create
living spaces that are extremely green and artful. This
project is a small-lot subdivision in which each
homeowner owns the land under their house. This means
each of the ten houses is freestanding. The houses will
be extremely eco-friendly with extensive green
strategies and materials. These include small
greenhouses-in-the-air that the homeowner can use to
grow vegetables, trees or other plants.

house
of light
Light is extremely
important to this project, not least because one of the
occupants is a professional photographer. A centerpiece
of the house, the great room is a double-story room with
a central skylight designed to frame the sky.
Double-height windows in the great room open to the view
over the canyon and the rooms on this side of the house
will fill with the play of light on water from the long
pool/hot tub/reflecting pond that runs the length of the
house. An interior garden, open to the sky, brings
sunlight directly into the heart of the house.
